What does Nerf stand for?
The term “Nerf” is popular internet slang for making something harmless, but its origin wasn’t the internet. NERF is a shorthand for Non-Expanding Recreational Foam and a trademark of the Parker Brothers. It’s also slang for polyurethane off-road racing road paddings.
Initially, the aim was to develop a softball for indoor fun that won’t break windows or injure children. However, its rapid popularity and expanding franchise meant that Hasbro could expand that aim.
The Nerf Blaster
Nerf blasters are, in its most straightforward description, a type of armament that launches nerf foams. You can find nerf guns in all shapes and sizes, with only their foams being a unifying theme. Surprisingly or unsurprisingly, the modern N-Strike Nerf guns look very much different from the original blasters. Modern Nerf guns now look more like guns than bows and arrows.
Advancing technology allows for more design choices, firepower, and styles. The Blast-A-Ball was Hasbro’s first release of nerf guns in 1989 and became an instant fav. Its following Bow ‘n’ Arrow was even more accessible and launched nerf guns as the kid-choice in toy armaments.
How Do Nerf Guns Work?
All nerf guns work the same, from Sharp Shooter to Rip Rockets Blast Hammer. It’s an engineering combination of plungers, valves, and springs with a much grander execution. You can even call a nerf blaster a gun that works without a chemical fuel or use a bullet.
All nerf guns have an inner plunger that sucks air into the gun barrel and compressed in the plunger tube. When you depress the gun’s trigger, the barrel pressure will fire the foam ball. It’s because your blaster foam ball is a spring-loaded mechanism. This spring is usually depressed, but the air pressure will relax when you trigger the gun. The relaxation applies direct kinetic energy to the plunger and releases its compressed air.
Nerf guns are a classic example of the conversion of potential energy to kinetic energy. The more pressure your blaster can handle, the faster it can shoot your foam balls. Also, the better your blaster’s spring system, the more power will be behind its fire.
Can A Blaster Fire More Than One Ball at A Time?
Most Nerf guns can fire foam balls at prodigious speeds; however, they can’t fire more than once. This disability is a result of the blaster’s mechanism of operation. The system has the name “cascading pressure valve mechanism,” which allows Nerf blasters to conserve power as they fire. It lets all nerf guns fire numerous balls rapidly without any noticeable decrease in ball speed.
Cascading pressure valve mechanism works by directing the pressure that firing the gun releases. As you fire the first ball, the force travels to the second ball’s valve, and so on. However, it means that your gun can’t fire all its shots at once. The good news is that you can bypass this limitation with a simple modification.
Don’t fully load the balls into the firing mechanism to create a half opening in the valves. Since air is rushing into all the valves at once, the gun can also fire every nerf at once. It’s a simple modification you can use with all nerf guns. However, the bad news is that you will get lower power on your blaster with the mod.
Some Popular Nerf Guns Since 1989
Nerf blasters had come a long way since their invention in 1989. Not only do they fire faster and look different, but they can also fire more varying payloads. You can now find battery-operated nerf guns on the market and even some automatic fire mechanisms. But despite these advancements, some nerf guns of old still have some relevance in a friendly gunfight.
N-Strike Rapid Raider Fire CS 35
This blaster is a 2009 model sports a massive dart capacity. You can store up to 35 payloads at a time and alternate between slam and single fire instantly. An advantage of CS 35 over some other models is that its rapid-fire can work without a battery.
N-Strike Elite Hail Fire
This monster of a nerf gun was 2012’s bad boy with its hulking form and 75-foot range. It’s a semiautomatic blaster and has crazy ball storage capacity with battery-assisted firing.
The proton was the best blaster for 2011 before Hail Fire became a thing. It sports a new form of nerf payload mostly frisbees by another name of “XLRs.” This blaster has an incredible 60-foot reach but has a relatively low ammo storage capacity.
N-Strike Vulcan EBF-25
It was a battery-powered toy machine gun on steroids. This blaster could empty its 25-dart payload in less than 10s by full-automatic fire. Much like a machine gun, it also has a belt to load more clips and is unreasonably big.
At a glance, Hasbro’s 2006 maverick could pass for a revolver, if it was blue and yellow. You get a six-dart capacity and easy access reloading. Unfortunately, this blaster lacks auto-fire, which limits its firing speed.
Despite its 1994 build, the bazooka is still an excellent design. You can fire its entire 15-ball ammo in around five seconds.
It’s not only Hasbro that makes string and pump toy guns like nerf guns. Some non-nerf guns are Max Force Manta-Ray and Hyper Sight Expand-a-Blast, among others.
Can a nerf gun kill you?
In its base form from Hasbro, a nerf gun isn’t very dangerous, nor is it significantly threatening. Indeed, Hasbro deserves an ovation for their efforts in making all nerf guns as safe as possible. So, while it’s not impossible to kill someone with a nerf gun, it’s a 1/10000000 chance (improbable).
The danger all nerf guns represent only begins to show when you don’t use it according to instruction. Not every dart and ball you’ll see on the market is safe to use with all nerf guns. Some blasters and darts also have a minimum safe distance for use.
The NERF N-Strike Hail-Fire Gun can shoot balls at a fantastic 50mph, and newer models are faster. Recent tests also show that some powerful nerf blasters can achieve speeds of up to 70kmph. All these realities mean that hitting the wrong spot with the wrong dart can cause serious injuries.
All nerf guns represent a particular danger to soft tissue like the eye, even though they can’t penetrate it. It’s for that reason that Hasbro advises you to wear protection when engaging in any all nerf gun battle. In fact, according to statistics, most injuries due to nerf blaster fights are to the eye.
There are also modifications that you may perform to your nerf gun that may also prove dangerous. Imagine the danger of a nerf gun that fires razors can represent. However, without these modifications, all nerf guns are safe for kid use.
Dangers of Nerf Guns
- Some kids can easily confuse a nerf blaster with a real gun. You may want to keep your real blaster away from your child, so he doesn’t mistake it for a blaster.
- Without appropriate protection, a single hit to the eye from a nerf gun can cause blindness. 99% of all injuries due to nerf guns are to the eye.
- Some inappropriate modifications can make nerf guns as dangerous as a real one. If you want to modify your Nerf blaster, good advice is not to touch the ball or dart.
Simple Mods for All Nerf Guns
Modifying a nerf blaster to your taste is infinitely more straightforward and safe than it seems. Within a couple of minutes, you can make your blaster look entirely different. One of the reasons nerf guns are better than airsoft or paintball is their customizability.
Before you start making a monster nerf blaster, you may need a couple of things first.
Most Nerf blaster modifications will involve changing your gun barrel. It’s because the traditional barrel for most blasters is not the best, and the possible replacements are usually better. You will need both a hot glue gun or stick and hot glue to bond different gun materials together. The sandpaper is invaluable for ridding yourself of unwanted materials and rough cuts. You may also use Epoxy in place of hot glue because it’s more durable. Another popular glue in all nerf gun modifications is plumber’s goop because it’s easier to apply.
Of course, you’ll need a lot of other tools like a hacksaw to see through your materials and gun. Screwdrivers are necessary, as are rotary tools and pipe cutters.
Replacing the barrel of your blaster is not a task you should undertake lightly. Its rewards in the case of a successful replacement, however, can be worth it. One main reason why people replace their barrel is to increase their gun’s power and range. It’s because a suitable replacement can turn your slow-firing blaster into something much better.
You can perform the modification in two ways.
In this case, you simply cut away the old barrel and place your new one. Unfortunately, replacing your stock barrel with a better-performance material has one disadvantage. You’ll need a ramrod to insert new darts, which isn’t practical in a nerf battle.
With this setup, you can load your darts faster and easier without compromising performance. Simply replace your old barrel by gluing two replacement pipes side-by-side. Also, stick a coupler unit to the barrel space on the gun. You should then insert any of the two tubes as your new barrel. In a gunfight, quickly remove the barrel, load your blaster, replace it, and blast away in seconds. The coupling setup is advantageous because you can even use the two barrels alternatively.
The Different Barrel Materials
What you want your blaster doing will determine which material you’ll use for your new barrel.
PETG is an excellent choice for backloading and frontloading micro darts. It’s cheap and can be cut easily. However, PETG doesn’t work well in a coupler setup.
Brass also works with both frontloading and backloading micro darts and gives excellent performance. Unfortunately, it’s pricy, difficult to cut and doesn’t work with coupling.
PVC can work with couplers, unlike the majority of other materials. It’s also cheap, reasonably durable, is easily cut, and also frontloads or backloads micro darts.
CPVC is an excellent idea for coupling setups with its good quality and low price. You can both backload and frontload micro darts with it.
It’s possible to nest one barrel material in another to increase their durability. Brass, for example, isn’t an excellent material for nerf gun barrels because it deforms too easily. But if you must use brass, nesting it in a PVC cover is excellent at maintaining its shape.
Other popular modifications include removing the air limiter for a better range and replacing the string. Using a shorter, more flexible, and stronger spring will increase the power of your gun significantly. Another modification involves replacing the O-ring with a new one that has a better seal. Finally, some people plug their blaster’s over-pressure release valve for an even higher power.
As parents, it’s alright to worry about your kid’s toy’s safety, but all nerf guns have precautions to improve safety. Simply ensure your kids wear protection for their eyes and have as many gun battles as they like. Us adults can also participate in this blaster goodness to have a fun time.
