Car Subwoofer Tips & Guide

As you can see, there is a wide selection of some of the best car subwoofers available online to buy right here. However, you may have some questions on your mind, and we will look at some of them for you here.

How Many Subwoofers Do You Need In a Car?

car subwoofer

Here is all depends on the genre of music you listen to when driving. In general, if you listen to techno, bass-heavy, or hip-hop music, then you may need two subwoofers. However, for all other music types, one subwoofer is enough.

How Do You Set Up a Subwoofer?

When installing a subwoofer, you cannot just place it anywhere, even if the sound is omnidirectional. Furthermore, not all car subwoofers come with a wiring kit supplied, and you may need to buy additional wiring. Therefore, look for a wiring kit that has different cables and connectors as follow:

  • Power wire about 20-foot long
  • Three-foot ground wire
  • RCA wire with red and white connectors 15-feet long
  • Blue remote wire of 15-feet long
  • Speaker wire
  • 50A in-line fuse and holder
  • Crimp ring terminals to help connect the wires
  • Plastic crimp wire for connecting the remote wire

Decide on a stable and well-ventilated spot to place the subwoofer, such as the trunk or underneath the seat. Start by disconnecting the car battery and route the power wire to the car engine through the firewall of the vehicle. Once done, run the power cable from the battery to the subwoofer.

Now, remove about six inches off the front end of the power wire and set it aside for later, as you will place the in-line fuse here. Take wire strippers and strip ½ inch of the insulation from the rest of the wire. Take the wire-crimping tool, crimp the exposed wiring, and plug it into the in-line fuse.

Once done, connect the length of the wire with the fuse and position in a safe spot. Take the power cord and hook it up with the positive terminal of the battery. Take the RCA and remote wire, run it through to behind the stereo head, and cable it into the colored connectors of the stereo.

Connect the blue wire of the remote to the stereo blue wire and place the radio back into the enclosure. Now you need to secure the ground wire against exposed metal and best done near the tires. You may need to remove some of the carpeting for a full view.

Before installing strip ½-an inch of the wire while keeping the wire strands wrapped together and push the cable into the ring terminal to attach to the bolt.

Now you need to wire the amp to the sub if the subwoofer does not already have one built-in. The amps wiring connects directly to the subwoofer. Connect the red power cable to the amp and plug the blue remote wire into the remote slot on the amplifier. Attach the black ground wire to the negative slot of the amp.

Once done, connect the subwoofer to the amp using speaker wires if spate. Attach the RCA cable to the back of the amp on the colored ports. Now you are done and need to reattach the negative battery terminal cable to test your subwoofer.

How do you connect a subwoofer at home?

How do you connect a subwoofer at home?

While this might sound strange, it is possible to use a car subwoofer in your house, but you need to remember it works at a lower current than an appliance in the house.

Start by controlling power!

You will need to convert the subwoofer for home use with a power inverter to control the power. Buy a converter that can convert 12V with two plugs. The one plug is for the woofer and the other for the wall outlet.

Connecting the woofer to the car amp

Next, you need to take 16-gauge speaker wire and best to check the woofer specifications first. Connect amp and woofer with the cables and make sure that the red wired twisted with red wires and the dark wires twisted with dark wires.

Connecting the subwoofer to the home amp

First, you need to join the wires to the subwoofer input terminals and then the output terminals on the amp. Therefore, you will need to pair the red with red and white with white.

Connect the Speakers

Now connect the remaining speakers of the home audio system and make sure to use the RCA wires to connect it to the leading amp of the home system.

Plug the Power Inverter In

Now plug the power inverter into the subwoofer, connect the inverter to the wall outlet, and enjoy a couple of thumping sounds.
