Types of Angle Clamps
As mentioned earlier, there are different types of angle clamp, and these types are used for almost the same projects. But, they come in different designs. some of these designs are:
Single screw angle clamp
The single screw angle clamp is made with one screw that is used in controlling the movement of the jaws.
The parts that include the two jaws can rotate as this will enable the clamp to hold workpieces of different thicknesses and as well create straight and perfect joints.
The single clamp is also used for different types of materials. It comes in heavy-duty and light-duty design. I can also be used to attach different types of materials such as plastic, metal, and so on.
Double screw angle clamp
A double screw angle clamp, also known as corner clamp comes with two screws that are used in controlling each jaw individually. That is, when a when you want to clamp two objects of different thicknesses, you need to adjust each jaw independently until they both fit perfectly.
The double screw angle clamp is great for picture framing as the edge of the clamp is square-shaped. This square edge helps to ensure that there are no mistakes, and it leaves the joints at the perfect 90-degree angle. These clamps are commonly used in different pairs when creating a picture frame or other objects. These pairs are used together for straight assembling of opposite corners.
Some clamps are designed with the quick-release option, and some models come with this feature for faster setting up and ease of clamping. The double screw angle clamp comes with two buttons, with one on each jaw. These buttons, when pressed, helps to move the jaw for quick assembly of the objects quickly.
Welding angle clamp
A welding angle clamp is made explicitly for welding corners. It is a heavy-duty angle clamp that comes with sturdy and strong design. This is why it is the ideal clamp for welding purposes since it involves the attachment of two different parts via fusion. Fusion also consists of the act of pressurizing the clamp.
Also, the welding angle clamp can be attached to a drill press machine for holding objects tightly during the drilling process.
How to Clamp at ANY Angle
There are various types of clamps. This is why clamps are the primary instrument of a woodworker.
Although different clamps are designed for 90-degree angles, such as use in cabinet making and picture frame making.
But, you may find yourself in a situation whereby you will need to clamp two unparalleled angles.
Clamping at any angle may seem a daunting task at first, but you will find it easy when you know how it is done.
For a 45 degree angle, many people make the mistake of trying to use a bar clamp with a rotating head, glue it up and tighten the clamp. But, this may not work, and you will find yourself trying the process again until it works.
You only need five minutes to do this but get a few essential tools and pieces of wood nearby. Get these things ready:
A piece of wood
A piece of paper
Here are the steps below:
Get a piece of wood and a piece of paper.
Make a 45-degree angle by folding the piece of paper. Raise one angle along the short tip of the paper and place it at the opposite long tip, and line up the short and long edges of the paper.
The paper trick is better when you want to check angles around your workshop within a short period because using a folded paper is better than using a metal angle to reach delicate points or check the angle of a blade.
Make a 90-degree angle. Use the down part of your scrap board by lining up one tip of the 45-degree angle. Use a pencil to mark the edge (folded), and you can as well use the other edge of the 45-degree angle. Horizontally flip the template over and create another line.
Ensure that the meeting point between both the first and second lines is at the middle of your scrap board or close to it. Ensure that the V shape isn’t too deep to prevent it from splitting when its under pressure.
Mark the edge by drawing a straight line and ensuring the V shape is at the center of the final block.
If you’re concerned about using the exact angles, use the edge of your paper to create a vertical line that is 90 degrees away from the last edge of your scrap board.
The fifth step involves drilling at the intersection. It is not a necessary step, though. You can make a hole at the meeting point of both 45-degree lines by using a drill. You can use any type of drill that seems ideal or works best for you. The drilled hole will help create some space at the meeting point of the V block to help take care of mitered corners or other delicate corners that seem off.
Using a saw, detach the V block of the scrap lumber depending on the angle you want and how deep your V is. The next thing is to cut both sides of the V shape and make the drilled hole very effective by keeping the blade inside your pencil lines.
At this point, you can clamp at any angle of your choice, be it 30, 40, 45, and so on.
Get sandpaper and wipe the edges of the V block and do the clamping.
This method can be used to make a clamp at any angle with a custom block by simply following the process.
Types of Clamps
Clamps come in different styles which includes:
Bar clamps: Has arms that are easy to adjust and enlarged or compressed to fit the object. It’s is used for holding edges when gluing, especially in woodwork. It is also USD to apply pressure to the glue line to prevent it from slipping.
C-clamps: Used for cutting, welding, or carpentry.
Hand screws: Used in furniture repair or holding small pieces. It is made of wood or metal.
Deep-throat bar clamp
How to Use an Angle Clamp Safely
Run a very deep check on a beam before using it and avoid using any faulty hoists, beams or beam clamps.
Get a safety hook and use it to join any attachment that is hanging to the beam as this will help prevent issues of accidental detachment.
Assemble the structure from which you’re suspending the angle clamp the right way and ensure that the weight is enough for a hoisted beam or additional beam. If you’re not sure of the right way to do this, consult a professional or an expert and do not be tempted to set up the beams yourself.
Use the correct angle clamp for the job. There are different WLL (Working Load Limit) for all clamps. For instance, you need to get a 10 Tonne beam clamp if you’re lifting a load of 6.2 Tonnes. Overloading is very dangerous, and it could lead to severe accidents when the angled clamp breaks.
Ensure the hoist and clamp youre using are compatible and ensure that the safety hook is attached directly into the beam clamp. Avoid forcing safety hooks into the beam clamp to avoid causing damages to your accessories, including the beam clamp.
Ensure to position the beam above the hoisted loads center of gravity, and the load won’t be swinging or be at a corner to your beam clamp. Doing this will help prevent injury or being exposed to safety risks.
You may have to use a spreader beam If you will be using two clamps in tandem and also make sure that the beam clamps do not suspend more than the WLL.
Check the beam clamp for damages when disintegrating the structure and ensure you store and handle them the right way. Also, avoid dropping or throwing your beam clamps to prevent it from getting damaged.
Always consult your supplier before replacing the bolts on a beam, as this could result in the fitting of the wrong screw. This could lead to an accident or damage your clamp.
Things to Consider Before Using an Angle Clamp
- Wear a face shield and safety glasses.
- Use the right clamp size and style
- Consider the weight and strength and clamping pressure, throat depth, the material used for the clamping surface, ease of adjustment
- Check the end of the screw and ensure it rotates well before using it.
- Replace bent spindles and do not use clamps with frames that are bent.
- Ensure the anvil parts of the clamp, and the pressure plate are carefully fitted with the object before clamping
- Keep the jaws closed until the clamp becomes very tight. For instance, some glue will come out during tightening, which is a sign that the object is very tight.
- To prevent marking the work, use pads with C-clamps.
- As soon as the job is done, detach the clamps as it’s only used for temporarily holding the object in place.
- To prevent the object from slipping, keep all the tools very clean and oil all the moving parts of the clamps. Also, ensure there is no oil or dirt on any of the tools that will come in contact with the workpiece.
- Keep C-clamps in a rack after use.
Avoid the following:
- Avoid using very large clamps due to the large throats. Use deep-throat clamps instead.
- Avoid using any hammers, wrenches, pliers, or pipes for tightening clamps and use only tools that are designed for wrenches.
- Use specific lifting clamps and do not hoist with C-clamps.
- Avoid using C-clamps in constructing scaffolds for workers.
Angle clamps are designed to make woodworks and metalworks easier. This is why it is an essential tool in holding workpieces together or helping to create better workpieces.
