Will Any DSL Modem Work With AT&T?

The answer is no. Each ISP has different protocols that instruct how they share internet connections. It means that unless your modem can understand AT&T’s handshake protocol, you’re out of luck. So, no, you can’t use any other modem for AT&T DSL besides what they recommend.

While AT&T approved DSL modems are relatively expensive, their advantages make up for the price. They have a longer lifecycle than most other DSL modem types and are more durable.

As with all technology, there are ways to bypass this limitation, but they are all extremely illegal. Thus, legally speaking, no other DSL modem will work with AT&T DSL service except for AT&T approved DSL modems.

Do You Need A Special Router For DSL?

The answer is no. Routers do absolutely nothing else to your internet connection beyond sharing it. So, any router will do for your DSL connection regardless of the service provider. However, it’s better to use the same router type as your modem for better compatibility.

While the modem represents the brain of a DSL connection, a router represents its nervous system. Most ISPs will sell you a DSL subscription together with a modem and router combo (rent or buy). While a router is not a necessity for operating a DSL internet connection, it adds to its usefulness.

What Are Routers?

The router is a small device that lets you share your modem connection to all your other devices. It creates multiple local IP addresses (LAN) for your other devices to share. The router will connect directly to your modem and broadcast your internet connection to as many devices as possible.

So, while a modem can operate without a router, routers can’t run without modems to provide an internet connection. A router also provides security for your computer by configuring an internet traffic filter to your tastes. It’ll let you lockout certain websites (for parents) and traffic to protect your PC from hackers.

DSL services provide an internet connection to the single device you connect directly to the landline. So, routers are a vital device to own if you’ll be operating a DSL service.

All you’ll need to do is to connect it via an ethernet cable to all your other devices. Even better is that most new options can create a LAN wirelessly for data sharing over Wi-Fi.

The Different Types of Modems

Different Types of Modems

Modems exist as one of those electronic components that we can’t group into any broad categories. There are so many ways manufacturers can make modems that there are tons of ways to arrange them.

Internet Type Category

It’s the most popular categorization because it’s the one that influences what you’ll buy the most. This category depends on the type of internet connection the modem for which will be working.

Dial-Up modems are relatively similar to DSL modems, although there are a few differences. They transmit data through your landline and also operate on analog-digital signal exchange. Dial-up modems may come as integrated or external modems.

Cable modems transmit signals through cable providers by radio frequency channels. It uses the same frequencies as that of cable television, allowing TV operators to become ISPs. The technology combines HFC and RFoG to give you a high-bandwidth, broadband internet connection.

DSL modems are one of the most popular choices in this modem category. They also offer broadband internet service through a landline, but way faster than dial-up and cheaper than cable.

An advantage of DSL modems is that you can talk on the phone and access internet data simultaneously. Most AT&T approved DSL modems are of this type.

A fax modem allows you to turn your computer into a fax machine and receive Fax directly through a landline.

Satellite modems are the latest types of modem in this category. It transmits signals between a satellite ISP and your PC and is one of the most expensive.

ADSL modems, while there are similarities between DSL and ADSL modems, they work differently. The modems send and receive data through landline and ISP as a standard DSL connection. Some AT&T approved modems are ADSL modems.

ADSL uses asynchronous transmission instead of synchronous like a regular DSL modem. This fact, however, means that download speeds are usually faster than upload speeds on the modems. ADSL is an abbreviation for the Asymmetric digital subscriber line.

ISDN modems are another of the latest modems that allow for direct voice digital transfer. It’s different from most other modems because it doesn’t do any digital-analog-digital conversion.

With ISDN modems, all your transmissions are entirely digital. It can also transmit both voice and data at the same time within a single line.

Duplex Category

It’s a method of classifying modems that depend on their directional capacity. Based on the duplex categorization, your modem will either be a full-duplex modem or a half-duplex one.

The half-duplex modem allows you to transmit data in only one direction at a time. This fact means that you can’t request webpages while downloading data at the same time. Incoming data will also have priority over outgoing ones in a half-duplex modem.

The advantage is that it’s not only cheaper and safer but also protects your device from getting confusing instructions. However, it’s more cumbersome and slower than the other option.

Full-duplex modems allow you to send and receive data at the same time. You can download webpages and upload videos at the same time with a full-duplex modem. The modem ensures that no type of data exchange has priority over the other.

Because it uses two carriers, it’s significantly pricier than the other option. However, it has faster uploads and is a more modern design. Full-duplex modems are the popular choice for both DSL modem manufacturers and users.

Wire Category

This categorization depends on the number of line interface a modem has. Each of the two types has its advantages and disadvantages that make them popular with users and manufacturers.

Two-wire modems use its two-line interfaces for both incoming and outgoing data. It’s usually the cheaper option between both types of wire modems. Full-duplex two-wire modems are rare because they are challenging to operate, so the half-duplex form is popular.

The four-wire modem, on the other hand, can efficiently operate both half and full-duplex forms. They use four wires, a pair for uploads, and another pair for downloads.

Installation Category

This category classifies modems, depending on how you will install them in your home. Beyond portability and ease-of-use, there are not many differences between the modems of these categories.

Internal Modems are also popularly known with the name on-board modems or integrated modems. They look like a simple card that device manufacturers install on the device motherboard. It’s complicated to install and move, but are exceptionally easy to use.

Since they come directly with your devices from the manufacturer, you don’t even need to pay separately for them. However, they may be incompatible with your ISP, depending on your device’s manufacturer. It may also require authentication for connection.

External modems are the standard choice for DSL and landline internet connection users. They require a direct cable connection with your device and are completely removable. An excellent external modem will have indicator lights to indicate when your connection is good and when it’s processing.

It connects directly between your landline and one of your device’s COM ports. It’s easy to set up, has flexible use, and is highly mobile but is often expensive and cumbersome. Unlike internal modems that draw power from your computer, external modems require an external power source.

Wi-Fi modems transmit data through radiofrequency without ever needing any form of a physical connection. It’s often the priciest modem in this category, and the technology is rapidly expanding. However, it works only with LAN and cellular technology.

Synchronization Category

This categorization is based on the type of signal and formula that the ISP uses to transmit your internet connection.

Synchronous modems always transmit upstream and downstream at the same speed by synchronizing to a clock signal. This fact allows it to handle a continuous stream of data and stabilizes your internet connection.

Asynchronous modems replace the clock signal in the other type with error-correcting formulas. Because there is no artificial timing of data bytes, it’s usually the faster modem option. But for this same reason, the connection may be unstable.

These are the main broad categorizations that exist for a modem, but not all of them.

How to Setup A DSL Modem?

Once you have a DSL connection and an AT&T approved DSL modem, the next step is to set it all up.

Step 1 is to read all the instructions in your modem manual. It’s because some modem manufacturers and ISP require you to install your modem in a specific way.

Step 2 decides whether you want both a DSL internet connection and a phone line at the same time. If you choose to have both, you’ll need a DSL splitter to do it.

Plug the splitter into the wall port that has the phone connection. The DSL splitter has two ports with one labeled “LINE” and is the one with a phone filter in it.

Step 3 will require you to plug your telephone cable into the LINE port. Now attach your DSL modem to the other port with another telephone cable. This different port will not have a filter and will serve your internet needs.

Note: There’s more to do if you need more than one filtered DSL connection for your FaxFax or other phone lines. All you need is to buy DSL filters and plug each of these devices to a filter.

Step 4 is to attach your modem’s power source and plug it into an outlet to power it up. You should use a surge protector to protect the modem from power surges.

Step 5 happens once the modem starts booting up when you power it up. It will begin synching in an attempt to contact your ISP’s DSL equipment. The signal representing “sync” on the modem will repeatedly flash while it’s doing this. Once it syncs, the lights will solidify.

Note: Your DSL modem will always attempt sync the moment you turn it on. So, it’s better to have it working even when you’re not using it to save yourself the wasted time.

Step 6 is the step where you connect the DSL modem with your computer after syncing. You’ll require some configuration on your device even after syncing to make everything work. So, use an ethernet cable to connect your computer to the modem.

Step 7 requires you to configure your computer to the DSL modem using an installation disk. The disk should come with the modem.

If you don’t get an installation disk with your DSL modem, you can ask your ISP to provide the instructions. You can also lookup instructions online on manually configuring your DSL modem to a computer.

Step 8 is for users that want to operate multiple devices through their DSL internet connection. You’ll need a router to do this either wirelessly or through ethernet cables. Connect your DSL modem with your router using an ethernet cable.
